Jan Mikulka je malíř, který maluje především portréty a to tak dobře, že v roce 2015 získal BP Portrait Awards každoročně vyhlašovanou National Portrait Gallery v Londýně. Egon Bondy jednou napsal: „Popisovat nějaký portrét je blbost sama sebou, ale když je k tomu člověk redakcí nucen, tak ať aspoň přizná, že o tom ví.“ Přesto se o to pokusím. Mikulkovy portréty jsou výjimečně dobře namalované, ale není to jen vytříbená a mistrovská technika, kterou jsou pro diváka uchvacující, je to především výraz portrétovaných, Mikulkovy portréty jsou nesmírně silné, ať to zní jako sebevětší klišé, Mikulka umí vyjádřit psychologii člověka, dokáže zachytit člověka v jeho složitosti, jako lidskou bytost nabytou city a duševními chvěními, ze kterých má divák Mikulkových obrazů pocit, že každou chvílí rozvibrují plátno obrazu.
